Overview

Welcome to one of the most exciting and spectacular treks in Bariloche! The "4 Refugios" excursion offers an unforgettable experience, allowing you to explore the majestic Andes while enjoying the comfort of traditional mountain huts in Nahuel Huapi National Park. Over this 4-day adventure, you'll face a variety of challenging terrains and be rewarded with stunning views that make the effort worthwhile.

Day 1: The adventure begins at the Cerro Catedral parking lot. The trail heads southwest, keeping high above Lake Gutiérrez before descending into the Van Titter Creek Valley. After an easy two-hour walk, you’ll enter an ancient Lenga forest and cross a small bridge over the creek. The final stretch to Refugio Frey, located at 1,700 meters in the picturesque valley beside Laguna Toncek, is more challenging but offers magnificent views. Enjoy the night by admiring the stars reflected in the lagoon and the impressive granite spires. Overnight at Refugio Frey. Full board.

Hiking Hours: 5 hours

Day 2: After an early breakfast, the trek to Refugio San Martín (Jakob) starts with an ascent to Laguna Schmoll and then up to the north ridge of Cerro Catedral. The strenuous climb over rocky terrain is rewarded with spectacular views of Mount Tronador and the park. You’ll then descend into the Rucado Creek Valley, crossing forests and crystal-clear streams, before reaching the hut at Laguna Jakob. Here, a warm welcome awaits with hot chocolate or a cold beer. Overnight at Refugio San Martín. Full board.

Hiking Hours: 10 hours

Day 3: The third day is the longest and most challenging. After a hearty breakfast, you’ll take the trail to Laguna de los Témpanos and Paso Schweitzer. You'll face a demanding climb to Pico Refugio, using your hands and a rope in some sections. The trek continues through rocky and steep terrain to Cerro Navidad, followed by a descent to Refugio Laguna Negra, where a delicious dinner and comforting drinks await. Overnight at Refugio Laguna Negra. Full board.

Hiking Hours: 10 hours

Day 4: On the final day, head towards Refugio López before descending to Bariloche. After a refreshing breakfast, follow the trail around the lagoon and ascend Cerro Bailey Willis. The reward comes with an impressive view of Nahuel Huapi National Park from the ridge of Cerro López. The final descent will take you down a traditional path to Refugio López, and with a stop for a cold beer, you’ll continue down to the Circuito Chico road where transportation awaits. Overnight at Refugio López. Full board.

Hiking Hours: 10 hours

By the end of this epic trek, your legs will feel every meter descended, but the satisfaction of having completed one of Patagonia's most beautiful hikes will be an unmatched reward.
